Online learning is of particular interest to me - as are the opportunities afforded to learning through technology - as emphasised by my presence in an online learning program about educational technology! Both of these interests pushed me to consider Outlier as an EVA. More personally, the opportunities of online learning resonated with me as a student looking to progress myself professionally. I did not see the benefit in an in-person, full-time education when weighing the detriments of lost revenue, career pausing, and relocation requirements. As a student, online learning was a clear winner in terms of the value-add to my life.
The main takeaway I have from this exercise as an EVA is that my personal connection to a venture, while valuable, is only a small piece of an analysis. Despite the benefits for students, the main goal of institutions is to provide an education that prepares students for their lives, and their contribution to society. This accomplishment or progression of this goal must be the focus of the analysis. Simply because online education is convenient, does not mean it meets this rigorous criteria, as shown by many online education venture failures.
In considering Outlier from an EVA perspective recommending its use to Canadian institutions, I have been forced to consider what is important from an institutional perspective, and not my personal perspective. Along with the passion behind the venture, there needs to be a clear market, a clear value, and a clear direction within an opportunity or it will be impossible to garner support. Considering these key criteria from the perspectives of your potential investors is critical to the success of an opportunity pitch, and is something I will keep in mind when preparing my final assignment.
